Kyson Jay (Part 1)

Life has a funny way of working itself out. Labor is no exception to that. For the last few months of my pregnancy Kyson was head down and in position.
I thought for sure he would make an early appearance and that labor would be just perfect. Little did I know Kyson had other plans. During those same last months of my pregnancy Kyson would kick so hard out the front of my belly I thought for sure he might break through. I kept telling him that was not the exit. I guess he knew better then I did.

Let me give you a little background about the month leading up to Kyson's arrival for those of you who do not know. The month before my due date Kilo and I packed up and moved me back to Utah. Kilo then headed back to Washington and continued to work his job so that we would have insurance coverage on the birth of our son. I needed to be in Utah to start training for my stay at home job but Kilo last his insurance benefits the day he terminated employment. For the month leading up to his birth I lived with my sister Becky. It was such a great chance to get to spend time together and get to bond with each other. It made me feel a lot more secure knowing I was not living alone and had someone just in case I went into labor in the middle of the night. Our plan was to just pray for a huge miracle that Kilo would have enough time from when I went into labor until Kyson arrived to make it to Utah. It was a gamble but was necessary to avoid huge bills.

My birth plan was to do hypno babies and have a natural birth. I bought the program and studied hard. Listened to the CD's regularly and thought I was completely ready. I had Becky listen to the birthing partner CD just in case Kilo did not make it in time to coach me thru. I was prepped and ready to go. Or so I thought. I really did not think that my labor was going to bring so many surprises.

On Easter Sunday, the last day of March I went to my parents house for the day to enjoy the celebration. By this point I was 40 weeks and 3 days and not enjoying it anymore. I think I would have been more relaxed about being past my due date had I not been so far from my husband and knowing the only thing keeping my husband from being able to join me in Utah was the need to go into labor. So I decided to start trying all the old wives tales. I had been 70% effaced and dilated to a 2 for the past month. I had lost my mucus plug earlier that week. In my mind, it was time! So I walked laps up and down my parents yard. Then I got on the swings. Nothing. So I decided to climb on the tramp and bounce. It was definitely more a bounce then a jump so I would not injure myself or the baby. As the evening winded down it looked as tho I might head into April pregnant and have to be induced getting to 41 weeks. I was not a very happy camper. I wanted my husband back. Frustrated and upset I headed over to my mother in laws house. After being there doing nothing but sitting on the couch I started having contractions. This was at 8:30. Go figure as soon as I rest is when it would start. My sister in law Kristie noticed me having one and so we all starting talking about it. We discussed the possibility of them only being Braxton Hicks and I wanted to burst into tears. The thought that I was so far past my due date and might only be having practice contractions still was too much for me to bear. I started to time them to see if they were consistent at all. Within 30 min of when they started they were 10 min apart and not slowing down. I decided it was time to head to my sisters and try and relax. I figured it was going to be a long night at home and I would head in to the hospital in the morning if they were still going strong.

I called Kilo on my way home and told him to book a flight for ASAP because our son was getting ready, He voiced his concern that they were possibly not the real thing and I could have smacked him thru the phone. I was not having it. They better be the real thing or this preggers might lose it. I went and got in the shower to try and relax or calm down a little. When I got out I called Kilo again and had him start timing these suckers. To me it felt like no time was passing in between them but I was not sure if it was just me psyching myself out or not so I wanted him to time them. At 12:30 I was having contraction every 2-3 minutes that lasted for a minute each. From what I had been told when they are that close together you want to head to the hospital. Within 4 hrs I had progressed quite quickly...or so I thought.

I got to the hospital and got checked in to the triage. McKay Dee hospital will not admit you until you are progressed to a 4. I was a "tight 3"!! Seriously I am contracting every 2 minutes and only dilated to a "tight 3"?!? I immediately got discouraged. That was definitely not what I wanted to hear! The nurse told me to walk the halls for an hour and let's see if we can get things moving along. Yes because that is what I want to do. Walk circles contracting every two minutes. Or not! Well I did it anyway because I was not about to head home. I was having that baby so I started walking. After an hour I got checked again. Still a "tight 3". So I got back on the trail and walked circles. An hour later I was a 3. Whether or not she was just trying to keep me from getting discouraged or not we will never know. So I walked the halls for another hour. After she told me for the 3rd time I was still a 3 and I was having contractions 1 minute apart that would last for a minute to a minute and a half I told er to leave me be for a bit and to let me think about what I wanted to do. She again told me they might send me home. Not if I have any say in the matter. All I wanted was to be admitted into the natural birthing room and I figured I would have been ok. I am so grateful to a Father in Heaven who knows much better then I. I was not progressing and they were not going to put me into a room until I either got to a 4 or was ready for the ephidural. I all of a sudden felt very strongly to get the ephidural. I did not want to because of my extreme phobia of needles but felt like it was the next step in his birth.

To be continued....
